
DeWitt first appeared on stage when she was 13. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ball State University. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. In the program, she was awarded the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship along with the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt stated that she had never met Abe Vigoda during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is well-known for her role as Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 run of sitcom Three's Company, a job she was offered after being cast in the second pilot episode of the show. She also portrayed Janet in an episode of the show in 1979. spinoff series The Ropers. DeWitt was the final actor to be featured in the series' 1984 finale. Then, she appeared in an episode on Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Then, she stopped acting for a number of years. The actress returned to acting in participation in a production of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. The actress later appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain featured an actress who was modelled after her voice. She was voiced by an actress in 1997. She appeared in an episode Cybill and also made an appearance in Living Single's final episode.
